Gentoo Group: Building connection and culture across a remote workforce
The Challenge
Gentoo relies on strong communication to support 60,000 customers and a largely dispersed workforce. When Workplace announced its closure, the organisation needed a trusted alternative, and fast. Workplace had become central during the pandemic, and losing it risked weakening connection, especially among frontline teams. The new platform needed to feel familiar, be simple to adopt, and support a growing digital ecosystem without overwhelming colleagues already navigating several new systems.
"Work Networks has given a whole new dimension to our internal communications using the Workvivo platform. The transition from Workplace was so smooth, and the support genuinely made us feel like we were their only customer".
- Racheal Broomfield, Communications Business Partner, Gentoo Group

Why Gentoo chose Work Networks
Work Networks offered the perfect balance of usability, housing sector understanding and genuine partnership. Weekly planning sessions and a structured, people-first rollout meant the entire transition, from contract signing in April to go-live early August, was smooth and stress-free. Gentoo’s IT team found the migration effortless, and communications colleagues described it as “the easiest project we ran this year”.
The impact was immediate: over 60% of colleagues were active in the first two weeks.
A platform colleagues actually use
Following launch, Gentoo focused on building real engagement, not just adoption. The internal communications team shifted key updates away from email to encourage habitual use. With the analytics in Workvivo the team can understand impact and content: who they are trying to reach and what the message should achieve.
How engagement grew:
● A new “Friday Focus” digest with weekly content summary
● Short, clear updates support remote and frontline teams
● Shout-outs, awards and appreciation posts to boost morale
● Exec leaders began posting, commenting and responding, improving visibility.
The platform quickly became the place colleagues go to stay informed, feel connected, and celebrate achievements, driven by enthusiastic users who encourage others to the platform.
Cultural Impact
Workvivo, implemented by Work Networks, has played a major role in strengthening connection across the organisation. Colleagues increasingly describe Gentoo as feeling more “together” and increasingly confident in its organisational voice. Leadership is accessible, recognition is widely visible, and teams across the business are engaging more readily.
"It genuinely feels like Work Networks understands our people, our sector and the frontline realities we face. The support has been exceptional, and the platform has transformed how we communicate."
- Racheal Broomfield, Communications Business Partner, Gentoo Group
Looking forward
Gentoo is now using Workvivo as the foundation for its next phase of cultural and digital transformation. Future developments include:
● Deeper Workday and Teams integrations
● More video-led content, including exec updates
● Exploring live broadcasts and podcasts
● Supporting a refreshed executive team driving cultural change.
Work Networks continues to be engaged, providing analytics and post implementation support plus guidance on how to develop the platform to support powerful engagement.
